CPG presents at DEOMI

DEOMI Symposium

Dr. Karol G. Ross presented at the 7th Biennial Equal Opportunity Diversity & Culture Research Symposium that took place 18-20 February 2009 at the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute, Patrick Air Force Base, FL. Ross presented on the “Development of the CCI: The Cross-Cultural Competence Inventory” co-authored with Carol A. Thornson, Dan McDonald, and Meagan C. Arrastia.

The purpose of the study was to support the understanding and development of Cultural Readiness for the Department of Defense and assist in guiding research and training efforts of DEOMI. Through critical incident interviews and a review of the literature on cross-cultural competence, Ross et al. identified variables of interest and adapted existing items or created items to measure the variables for the US Army population. The 149-item preliminary scale, along with demographic items, was distributed to 641 military personnel. After Item Analysis, the final scale consisted of 49 items and a preliminary model of cross-cultural competence was developed. Next, the team hopes to perform Confirmatory Factor Analysis in hopes to confirm the theoretical model and to collect more data to validate the CCI.
